FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
I’m sharing lots of private information with you. How will you protect my privacy?
We promise to never, ever, EVER share your information with outside sources. Never. EVER. All information you provide is used to process your orders or to contact you regarding transactions. We may contact you from time to time with information about new products, features or special promotions. But hey, if you don’t wish to receive these kinds of mailings, just use the easy “UNSUBSCRIBE” feature on the email and that will be the last one you ever see. And no, we won’t take it personally.
What forms of payment do you accept?
While we’re open to all kinds of payment—diamonds, gold bars, pretty much anything sparkly—our accountant insists that we only accept major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard and American Express). So we do not accept Paypal, personal checks, money orders, or direct bank transfers. Not even from our closest, bestest friends.
Why isn't condition described for each item?
The Japanese see beauty in imperfection and call it Wabi Sabi and we think vintage clothing is a perfect example. Instead of shunning decay from time, weather, love and age, we celebrate it! For a Vintage Crusader that means learning to embrace the subtle imperfections that appear over time.
We believe there are many vintage garments whose uniqueness overshadows their minor flaws. But minor flaws are where we draw the line. If we wouldn't proudly wear a garment out for public scrutiny then we don't expect you to want to either.
Since all of the items we offer are in excellent condition, we only feel it's necessary to disclose flaws that are outside the small amount of wear and tear that we normally allow. That means for many items, you won't see any condition disclosures. They're in fabulous vintage condition and ready to go! (Plus we make sure your item is in tip-top shape before sending it off by giving it an extra dose of TLC and one final eagle-eye inspection before it begins its journey to you.)
What is your return policy?
While we do our best to ensure that what you see is what you get, shopping online is a challenge. Colors appear differently on various monitors. A dress fits but the proportions just don't work on you. We get it. That's why we offer a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee on domestic orders. (No returns or exchanges on International orders.)
When you receive your package, inspect your items and contact us via phone (310.927.0893) or email (Returns@zuburbia.com) WITHIN 24 HOURS if you'd like to return your merchandise.
We'll give you a RETURN CODE to put on the front of your return package. You are responsible for shipping and insurance costs to return the item to us and the item must be received within 7 DAYS. Upon our receipt and inspection of an item in its ORIGINAL CONDITION, we'll gladly refund your purchase price or give you a 100% credit toward your next purchase.
We do reserve the right to refuse credit on any return, however, if we discover that you tried to pull a switcheroo, damaged a zipper, left makeup on the collar, etc. You get the point. We play fair and expect you to play fair too.
How long will it take to receive an item?
We know, we know, you want it yesterday but we haven’t figured out time travel just yet. Instead, in the good ol’ USA we rely on USPS Priority Mail and Express Mail.
US Priority Mail is FREE and has a 2-3 day delivery time. Express Mail arrives overnight and is available for an additional fee.
Our overseas friends need to have a bit more patience. USPS Global Priority Mail arrives in 1-2 weeks; International Express Mail arrives in 5 days. We currently do not offer free international shipping.
Of course, shipping times may vary slightly based on when we receive your order, if there are special packing needs for your item, if we forget the password to our high-security vintage vault, etc. But we promise to have your shipment on its way just as soon as possible, usually within 24-48 hours.
Who pays the customs fees on international orders?
We just love our overseas friends! But on international orders, you will be solely responsible for all customs fees and taxes associated with your order. And yes, we complete customs forms with the actual value of the items ordered. No exceptions.
Must I pay sales tax?
For 49 out of the 50 states, no. But for those of you who ship to California, we are required to collect sales tax. Believe me, we don’t like collecting it any more than you like paying it but it’s the law.
Do any celebrities shop at Zuburbia?
We love all vintage fashionistas and are just as happy to have our dresses strutting down Main Street in Wichita as we are to have them showing up on a red carpet in Hollywood. And while we do have A-list clients and celebrity stylists who shop with us, we don’t believe in kissing and telling. EVERY vintage crusader is important to us so we won’t be dropping any names here—maybe just a few initials from time to time.
Why are your prices and selection so varied?
We think the hippest, most sophisticated fashionistas have mastered the art of mixing high-end and low-end pieces. Sometimes you’re in the mood for a collectible designer item but sometimes a gal just wants a quick fashion fix to pump some life into her closet.
So we aren’t label snobs. We look for unique items with that “certain something” that sets them apart or quality, staple pieces from which you can build your wardrobe. We buy pieces that catch our eye. We don’t look for labels and then decide to buy a piece. Uh-uh. We find items that catch our eye and then are usually pleasantly surprised when we look at the label.
It’s a different way of thinking, sure, but then we’re doing a whole lot of things differently.
How often do you have sales?
We have always preached that when it comes to vintage clothing, you should “buy it when you see it.” So we don’t do sales. If you see something you like, you don’t need to wait with bated breath for the price to drop. We do offer occasional special offers to our Vintage Crusaders, Facebook, and Twitter friends, however, so be sure to sign up and join the fun.
How do you package your items?
We hate when an itty-bitty item arrives in a big ol’ box. That’s just a waste of energy and materials. And we hate fancy packaging that uses ink and chemicals and natural resources in an attempt to impress. But we also hate opening a box to find a damaged or wrinkled mess.
So…we’re working hard to get our packaging just right. Unfortunately, a lot of the most eco-friendly packaging materials are only available in huge quantities (so help us grow so we can start using them!)
In the meantime, your item will be carefully cushioned in acid-free tissue paper (Recycled--Mix 50% Post-Consumer/Post-Industrial from the most eco-friendly manufacturer), neatly folded, then nestled into a plastic zip-top bag to adequately protect your item from the elements. (No, plastic wasn't our first choice either and we're investigating other options but until then we hope you’ll re-use and recycle.)
Your bundle of joy will then be shipped in USPS packaging materials which have been Cradle-to-Cradle certified.
What is Carbon Neutral Shipping?
Regardless of your shipping choice, we’ll pay to offset the carbon used in its transport so that the shipping is “carbon neutral.” What this means is that we calculate the carbon footprint associated with the shipment of your item and purchase carbon offsets to neutralize the impact of the carbon produced with your outbound shipping. That's why we prefer shipping by ground --less energy is used than with air shipping. And we also prefer using the USPS service since they are already making a stop in your neighborhood every day, decreasing the additional resources used to get our vintage finds into your closet.
What is your policy on fur?
Zuburbia is totally opposed to the use of fur in today’s fashions and actively speaks out against the senseless slaughter of animals for the fashion trade. But somehow cutting up a beautiful vintage fur coat for animal beds or seeing that vintage fur coat clogging up a landfill doesn’t seem to honor either the animal who gave up its life or the designer and seamstress who toiled for hours to create the garment.
Since we live in a nation founded on freedom, we recognize that some fashionistas are going to choose to buy and wear fur garments regardless of our own beliefs. So after careful consideration, we have chosen to offer these fashionistas the chance to choose a vintage fur item in lieu of a new fur item. We see every fur sale from this site as one less new fur purchased on the open market. And someday, fingers crossed, enough enlightened souls will walk the planet so the wanton killing of animals for fashion’s sake will cease entirely.
In the meantime, we’ll continue to donate 10% of the sales of our fur and reptile pieces to animal activist charities.
Do you buy vintage clothing?
Yes, yes, yes! We are always scouring the globe for amazing vintage clothing--one piece, a small collection, or an entire estate. We also have a program for owners of vintage clothing stores without online presences that would like to feature their designer vintage clothing with us. Call us at 310.927.0893 so we can start the conversation or send pictures to email@example.com.
